Hydrant Flushing starts today and will continue through the daytime hours until Friday, April 12, 2024. Daytime hours are 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. As a precaution, we would ask that City water customers refrain from doing laundry during this time because of the possibility of discoloration in the water. The City regrets any temporary inconvenience this process causes and appreciates your cooperation during this time.
What Is Hydrant Flushing?
Hydrant flushing is the quick release of water from fire hydrants, used to maintain the quality of a city’s water distribution system. It serves several crucial purposes:
Ensuring Proper Water Flow: Hydrant flushing ensures that water flows properly in hydrants, benefiting firefighters, residents, and businesses.
Clearing Sediments and Minerals: Over time, sediments and minerals can accumulate in the water main. Flushing helps remove these deposits, maintaining high water quality.
Regular Maintenance: It’s typically done twice a year—in spring and fall—to keep the system in optimal condition.
Duration: The process takes about 30 to 60 minutes.
Discoloration and Water Quality
During hydrant flushing, water can become discolored. Some slight discoloration is natural and usually dissipates. However, if your water remains yellow or brown even after several hours, it’s essential to call a plumbing service. Persistent discoloration may indicate issues with the water main or pipes.
Hydrant flushing plays a vital role in maintaining water quality, ensuring proper flow, and protecting our water distribution system. So next time you see a fire hydrant being flushed, remember that it’s not just water—it’s an essential part of our safety infrastructure.
