EMERGENCY STORM OUTDOOR WARNING
SIREN INFORMATION
The emergency storm outdoor warning sirens will be sounded in the following manner to provide tornado warnings to Vandalia residents who are outdoors when a tornado warning has been issued or when a funnel cloud is sighted.
Tornado WATCH - The sirens WILL NOT sound.
Tornado WARNING - The sirens WILL SOUND in an even tone .
Funnel cloud SIGHTING - The sirens WILL SOUND in a wailing tone, no voice message. RESIDENTS SHOULD TAKE IMMEDIATE SHELTER.

THE OUTDOOR WARNING SIRENS WILL BE TESTED THE FIRST TUESDAY OF EVERY MONTH, WEATHER PERMITTING.
A TORNADO WATCH means that conditions are favorable for producing a particular weather event, but that it has not formed yet. Watches alert the public that they need to pay closer attention than usual to the weather, just to be safe. A tornado watch is issued when atmospheric conditions could cause tornadoes to form, although none have formed yet. SIRENS NOT SOUNDED.
A TORNADO WARNING means that a particular weather event has formed and that it threatens the area under the warning. A tornado warning means that a tornado is actually present and moving in the warned vicinity. The warning sirens will be sounded with an even tone for approximately 2 minutes. Residents should either take immediate shelter or be prepared to take immediate shelter and monitor the weather by either radio or television when under a tornado warning. SIRENS SOUNDED IN AN EVEN TONE.
A FUNNEL CLOUD SIGHTING means that a funnel cloud has been sighted by one of the weather spotters or the national weather service advises there is a funnel cloud in the immediate area of Vandalia. SIRENS SOUNDED WITH WAILING TONE. RESIDENTS SHOULD TAKE IMMEDIATE SHELTER.
